Groom's Guide: Dressing for an Autumn Wedding

March 24, 2016

Inspired by the fresh and playful twist on the classic grooms attire in our recent Bride To Be feature – we’ve put together an easy guide on how to dress for those autumn weddings.

It can certainly be a little tricky for us gents, since the general rule of thumb is to wear a suit to a wedding. But there are several options we can take when it comes to catering for those warmer months.

Most important thing to keep in mind is choosing your fabrics wisely! Avoid tweeds, worsted wool and polyester suits – instead look into breathable lightweight fabrics such as linen, cotton or wool.

Modern City Weddings

Choosing your attire is heavily based on where the wedding is taking place, as well as any specifications made on the invitation.

If it's a formal, black tie wedding set in the city, it's generally appropriate to keep it simple with a woolen dark grey, black or even navy hued pants and jacket paired with a white or off-white dress shirt.

Avoid a potentially dull and boring outfit by mixing up your classic look with a bold silk tie, or statement accessories such as flashy cufflinks and watches.

Country Weddings

When it comes to countryside weddings, don't be afraid to go a little fancy. Opt for a linen double-breasted jacket or a dazzling light grey 3-piece suit with a light cream or pink dress shirt. You can even go checkered for those of you looking to go a bit risky with your formal wedding attire.

Ditch the classic fit suit and go slim fit – consult with a tailor if necessary, because after all a well fitting suit is a great looking suit. Pair this up with some loafers to add a relaxed element to your look.

Beach and Coastal Weddings

Have a little fun when it comes to beach or coastal weddings. Going bright will certainly work in your favour, particularly when you need to spend long periods of time during the ceremony and reception outside in the warm sun. Light blue hues, cream, white and maybe even a touch of pink is the way to go!

Complete the look with a bright, fun pocket square and some dashing designer sunnies – depending on how informal the occasion is, you could even rock a pair of leather sandals.

Enjoy getting adventurous with the classic men’s wedding attire and don’t forget to check out our “With This Ring” feature in the February-April issue of Bride To Be. The full range seen in the feature is now also available in-stores and online here.
